ERICH LEINSDORF (1912-93) TYPED LETTER SIGNED, "Erich Leinsdorf," one page, April 30, 1943, of Austrian-born American conductor. Born to a Jewish family in Vienna, he came to America in November 1937 to work at the Metropolitan Opera, and was lucky to miss the Anschluss of March 1938, when Austria was taken over by Nazi Germany. Freshman Texas Representative, Lyndon B. Johnson assisted him in staying in the U.S. and becoming naturalized in 1942. In part: "Many thanks for your kind message on behalf of my appointment to the Cleveland Orchestra." The letter is to Fancesco Bartolomeo de Leone who was an American composer of italian descent. In fine condition.
