BOTANIST ADOLF ENGLER WRITES FELLOW BOTANIST AND PUBLISHER OF THE GARDENERS’ CHRONICLE, MAXWELL T. MASTERS, REGARDING A SPECIMEN OF ARISTOLOCHIA PROMISSA [WHICH IS FOUND IN W. AND W. CENTRAL AFRICA]
ADOLF ENGLER (1844-1930) HANDWRITTEN LETTER SIGNED, “A Engler”, one page, 8.75 x 5.75, 28 December 1891, on Koniglichen botanischen Garden Museum, Berlin, letterhead, to English botanist and taxonomist Maxwell T. Masters (1833-1907), by the German botanist notable for his work on plant taxonomy and phytogeography, who at the time of this letter was director of the Berlin-Dahlem botanical Garden, which he would transform it into one of the greatest botanical gardens of the world. In full: “Will you have the kindness to tell me if this Aristolochia from Kamerun (sp) is your Aristolochia promissa in Gardeners’ Chronicle 1889. The specimen is not to be returned.” In fine condition, with mailing fold line.
