BOTANIST ADOLF ENGLER HANDWRITES AN INTERESTING LETTER TO FELLOW BOTANIST AND PUBLISHER OF GARDENERS’ CHRONICLE, MAXWELL T. MASTERS ABOUT AN ARTICLE AND VARIOUS BOTANICAL ISSUES
ADOLF ENGLER (1844-1930) HANDWRITTEN LETTER SIGNED, “Dr. A. Engler”, 2 pages, 5.5 x 8.5, Munich, 6/1/1877, to English botanist and taxonomist Maxwell T. Masters (1833-1907), by the German botanist notable for his work on plant taxonomy and phytogeography, who at the time of this letter was custodian of botanical collections at the Botanical Institute of Munich. In part: “allow me to send you and article on Amoma phylum Jatini (?) and beg you to send me some (perhaps 25) separates of that article. I had already received the figures of the Araceae which were in the Gardeners’ Chronicle, also the figure of “Anthurium Jatini (?)”, but have not received the diagram of this plant and I do not know in which page it has been published. I hope you will have the kindness to add the citation. I have seen…but I do not know when that plant has been published. It is very disagreeable that we cannot have anybody in Germany who makes a complete list of the new published species….” This interesting content letter is in fine condition.
