DARCY, EMERY SIGNED PHOTO OF OPERA TENOR POSED IN STAGE COSTUME

$100.00

Description

EMERY DARCY SIGNED PHOTO OF OPERA TENOR, "Cordial greetings to Martha Sellars, Sincerely, Emery Darcy", 8 x 10, b/w, showing him posed in stage costume, probably as Siegmund from Die Walkure.  A couple of minor corner bends, otherwise in fine condition.

Emery Darcy (1908-1998) a tenor who sang at the Metropolitan Opera in the 1940's and early 50's. His roles were primarily comprimario, but very occasionally a lead such as Siegmund, as seen in this photo, came his way. He was a very rare operatic commodity: a Wagnerian Heldentenor (heroic tenor). Darcy combined the lusty, ringing power of a baritone with a tenor's high range. When Darcy stepped into Lauritz Melchior place to sing Parsifal, he got a critical ovation. He is also known for his work on Der Rosenkavalier (1949).  $100   #10787
