IN HIS OBITUARY HE IS DESCRIBED AS “HAVING A GIGANTIC INTELLECT, AND A COMPLETE DEVOTION TO SCIENTIFIC TRUTH” AND THAT POSSIBLY EXPLAINS THIS HANDWRITTEN AND SIGNED SHAKESPEARE QUOTE: “IGNORANCE IS THE CURSE OF HELL BUT KNOWLEDGE THE WING WHEREBY WE FLY TO HEAVEN.”
SIR EDWIN RAY LANKESTER (1847-1929) SIGNED SHAKESPEARE QUOTE, “E. Ray Lankester”, on a card 4.25 x 2.25, Feb. 21, 1905, by the British invertebrate zoologist and evolutionary biologist who studied protozoa, mollusca, and anthropoda, and was a leader in the study of invertebrate life histories. He also had a strong interest in prehistoric archaeology, held chairs at University College London and Oxford University, was Director of the Natural History Museum, and was awarded the Copley Medal of the Royal Society. He was a prolific author on biological theories, comparative anatomy, and evolution, for the general readership. He was active in attempting to expose the frauds of Spiritualist mediums during the 1920’s. His handwritten quote by Shakespeare, in full: “Ignorance is the curse of hell but knowledge the wing whereby we fly to heaven.” In fine condition, with minor age toning.
