Description

EDWARD S. HOLDEN (1846-1914) SIGNED CARD, “Edward S. Holden, December 11/1904”, on a card 4 x 2.5, by the American astronomer and the 5th president of the University of California. Earlier he had been professor of mathematics at the U. S. Naval Observatory and then director of the Washburn Observatory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1881-85) during which time he discovered 22 NGC objects (deep sky objects like nebulae and clusters of stars). Following his three years as president at the University of California (1885-88) he became the first director of Lick Observatory at the University of California (1888-97) and afterwards became librarian at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He wrote many books on popular science (and other things, such as flags and heraldry), including science books intended for children. The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
