Description

FAMOUS SCOTTISH ASTRONOMER HANDWRITES HIS FAVORITE JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE QUOTE: “LIKE THE STAR THAT SHINES AFAR….”

SIR DAVID GILL (1843-1914) SIGNED QUOTE, “David Gill”, on a card 4.25 x 2.75, by the Scottish astronomer who is known for measuring astronomical distances, for astrophotography, and for geodesy (the science of accurately measuring and understanding the Earth’s geometric shape, orientation in space, and gravity field). He was her Majesty’s Astronomer at the Royal Observatory at Cape of Good Hope (1879-1906). He was a pioneer in the use of astrophotography, making the first photograph of the Great Comet of 1882, and one of the early proponents of the Carte du Ciel project (an international venture aimed at mapping the entire sky). He was also the president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science and also president of the Royal Astronomical Society. His handwritten quote, in full: “Like the star that shines afar, Without haste and without rest, Let each man wheel with steady sway, Round the task that rules the day, And do his best”. He has also written “Goethe, translated by Prof. Bluekir”. The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning, and the date, “1909”, written in another hand, lower left.
