JAMES DWIGHT DANA (1813-95) SIGNED SLIP, “James D. Dana”, 3.25 x 1, by the American geologist, mineralogist, volcanologist, and zoologist, who made pioneering studies of mountain-building, volcanic activity, and the origin and structure of continents and oceans around the world. In 1850 he was appointed a Silliman’s Professor of Natural History and Geology at Yale. He was also the chief editor of the American Journal of Science and Arts. He was also responsible for much of the early knowledge on Hawaiian volcanism. Dana’s best known books included: System of Mineralogy(1837), Manual of Mineralogy (1848) became a standard college text and has been continuously revised and updated and the 23 edition is now in print, and between 1856-57 he published a number of books which attempted to reconcile scientific findings with the Bible. It comes professionally laid into a vintage 19th century engraved portrait. Both items are in fine condition, with minor age toning.
