Curtis Dwight Wilbur (1867-1954) Signed Slip, "Sincerely Yours, Curtis D. Wilbur", 4 x 1.5, a Naval Academy graduate (1884), practiced law in California, rising to the position of Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court in 1918. It was during his time on the California Superior Court that he wrote and first published (in 1905) his popular "Bear Family" stories for children. As Secretary of the Navy (1924-1929) in the Coolidge administration, Wilbur established the naval air force, a crucial component of victory in the Pacific two decades later. After leaving this post he was appointed to a federal judgeship of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. In fine condition, with minor age toning.
