HERE, IN THIS TWICE-SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH, AMERICAN PHYSICIST ARTHUR HOLLY COMPTON, WHO WON THE 1927 NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSICS FOR HIS EXPERIMENTAL PROOF THAT ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION POSSESSED BOTH WAVE-LIKE AND PARTICLE-LIKE PROPERTIES AND LAID A FOUNDATION FOR THE NEW QUANTUM PHYSICS, AND WAS LATER CHANCELLOR OF WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY, AS SEEN IN THIS 1951 UNIVERSITY COMMENCEMENT PROCESSION, ALONG WITH THEN SECRETARY OF DEFENSE, GENERAL GEORGE C. MARSHALL. THE TWO OF THEM HAD BEEN INVOLVED IN THE WWII MANHATTAN PROJECT CREATING THE ATOMIC BOMB.

Marshall together at the University commencement ceremony, by the American physicist who won the 1927 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of the Compton effect, which demonstrated the particle nature of electromagnetic radiation (proved that light had both wave and particle properties). He also had a major role, along with General Marshall, in the Manhattan Project during WWII.
