Description

CIVIL WAR PAYMASTER AT END OF AMERICAN CIVIL WAR, 1865

CIVIL WAR SOLDIER'S LETTER ON PAY DEPARTMENT U.S.A. LETTERHEAD, 3pp, May t, 1865, together with a stamped cover postmarked Louisville, Kentucky, from Elias Cosfer to his brother Daniel Cosfer, in Ohio.  A neat and legible letter regarding his pay office experience, his trip home, his mother' care and his sister. In part: "...having in my mind to resign and quit the service...From the indications received from Washington, the Army will be mustered out of service rapidly, and at best there will be but a short time now that paymasters will be required...I have been nearly three years from home and my business arrangements all broken up...If Eliza's health was good I would offer Mother a home with us, but she is not at all well enough to take proper care of her children...I think it quite likely that I will return home by way of Ohio...." Both items in fine condition, with the usual letter folds and age toning to the envelope.
