HE WAS THE AMERICAN SCHOLAR OF SANSKRIT WHO WROTE THE WIDELY USED SANSKRIT READER (1884) AND WAS THE EDITOR OF THE “HARVARD ORIENTAL SERIES” WHICH OFFERED SCHOLARLY ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS OF THE ANCIENT HINDU VEDIC TEXTS. HERE HE HANDWRITES QUOTES IN BOTH ENGLISH AND SANSKRIT.
CHARLES ROCKWELL LANMAN (1850-1941) SIGNED QUOTES IN ENGLISH & SANSKRIT, “Charles R. Lanman, Harvard College, July 1, 1920”, on a card 4.5 x 3.5, by the American scholar of the Sanskrit language and editor of the Harvard Oriental Series. He was a professor of Indic philology at Harvard and acquired many Sanskrit and Prakrit books and manuscripts for the university that were to foundation for what is today one of the most valuable collections of its kind in America. He was also President of the American Philological Association. His handwritten quotes in both English and Sanskrit, in full: “The man whose feet in shoes are best, Can just as (?) tread, As if the earth from East to West, with leather were bespread. – ‘Tis even so with a contented man. ‘Till everywhere abundant blessings find.” Beneath this quote he has written it in Sanskrit. The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
