WHILE CHEMICAL INSTRUCTION AS DEAN OF COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY’S SCHOOL OF MINES MADE UP MUCH OF HIS CAREER, HE WAS ALSO AN ENERGETIC PUBLIC HEALTH ADVOCATE AND WAS THE FOUNDER OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY AND SERVED AS ITS PRESIDENT FROM 1881-1889.
CHARLES FREDERICK CHANDLER (1836-1925) SIGNED QUOTE, “C. F. Chandler, School of Mines, Columbia College, May 26, 1874”, on a card 7.25 x 3.5, by the American chemist, best known for his regulatory work in public health, sanitation, and consumer safety in New York City, as well as his work in chemical education – for the majority of his life at Columbia University where he taught in the chemical department and served as the first Dean of Columbia University’s School of Mines. His handwritten quote, in full: “Never shrink from honest labor”. The large card is in fine condition with two vertical creases and minor age toning.
