HE WAS PROFESSOR OF PHYSICS AND DEAN OF THE GRADUATE DEPARTMENT OF BROWN UNIVERSITY AND HERE OFFERS HIS HANDWRITTEN ADVICE: “CULTIVATE THE ART OF REMAINING OBSCURE.”

CARL BARUS (1856-1935) SIGNED QUOTE, “Carl Barus, Providence, October 10, 1920”, on a card 4.25 x 3.5, by the American physicist who was Dean of the Brown University Graduate Department (1903-26) during which time he was a prolific scientific researcher who produced 350 articles and monographs. He did all types of research for the United States Geological Survey (1880-92), then a professor of meteorology at the United States Weather Bureau, and from 1893-95 he was a physicist at the Smithsonian Institution, where he assisted Samuel Langley in his experiments with flying machines. He was also the president of the American Physical Society (advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics) and a member of the advisory board of physics at the Carnegie Institution of Washington state. His handwritten quote, in full: “Cultivate the art of remaining obscure.” The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
