C. LLOYD MORGAN SIGNED QUOTE, ANIMAL PSYCHOLOGIST, ETHOLOGIST, EVOLUTION

$175.00

Description

HE WAS INTERESTED IN THE FIELD HE CALLED “MENTAL EVOLUTION” THE BORDERLAND BETWEEN INTELLIGENCE AND INSTINCT AND HE CARRIED OUT EXTENSIVE RESEARCH TO SEPARATE, AS FAR AS POSSIBLE, INHERITED BEHAVIOR FROM LEARNT BEHAVIOR. HE WAS A PIONEER OF ANIMAL PSYCHOLOGY AND AN OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTOR TO THE EVOLUTIONARY UNDERSTANDING OF ANIMAL BEHAVIOR.

C. LLOYD MORGAN (1852-1936) SIGNED QUOTE, “C. Lloyd Morgan, 30th June 1927”, on a card 4.25 x 3.5, by the British ethologist (study of animal behavior) and psychologist who is remembered for his theory of emergent evolution, and for the experimental approach to animal psychology now known as Morgan’s canon, a principle that the behavior of a nonhuman animal should not be interpreted in complex psychological terms if it can instead be interpreted with simpler concepts. This played a major role in behaviorism, insisting that higher mental faculties should only be considered as explanations if lower faculties could not explain a behavior. He is widely credited as the “father of comparative psychology” due to his contribution of guidelines for the psychological interpretation of animal behavior. He advanced extremely cautious interpretations concerning instinctive behavior and its relationship to intelligence and wrote many books on this subject, including: Animal Life and Intelligence (1890-91), Animal Behavior (1900), Instinct and Experience (1912), etc. No one has written with more sense about the animal mind than Lloyd Morgan. His perfectly appropriate, handwritten, Robert Browning quote (lines 306 & 307 of his poem Fra Lippo Lippi), in full: “God uses us to help each other so, Lending our minds out.” The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
