BOB JONES JR. SIGNED LETTER, "Bob Jones Jr.", 5.5 x 8.5, on Bob Jones University letterhead, August 30, 1947, by the son of the founder and second fundamentalist president of Bob Jones University , declining to renew membership in a lyceum organization. Two mailing fold lines and staple holes upper left, otherwise in fine condition.
Bob Jones Jr. (1911-97) was an accomplished Shakespearean actor and studied at Stratford-upon-Avon as a young man. He was President of Bob Jones University from 1947-1971 and then as chancellor until his death. He was a separatist fundamentalist who broke with other famous fundamentalist preachers, including Billy Graham and Jerry Falwell, because they were cultivating a more moderate, too "compromising", stance with those who denied biblical orthodoxy.
