The first transatlantic balloon flight ended on August 17, 1978, after setting a distance record of 5000 km (3107 mi) and an endurance record of 137 hours and six minutes. The helium-filled Double Eagle II, manned by American businessmen Ben Abruzzo (1930-1985), Max L. Anderson (1934-1983) and Larry Newman (born in 1947), took off from Presque Isle, Maine on August 11, 1978 and landed in Miserey, France.
