ASAPH HALL (1829-1907) SIGNED QUOTE, “Asaph Hall, 1905, Jan. 22nd”, on a card 5 x 3, by the American astronomer best known for his discovery of the two moons of Mars, Deimos and Phobos in 1877. He determined the orbits of satellites of other planets and of double stars, the rotation of Saturn, and the mass of Mars. He was a professor of astronomy at the U. S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. until his retirement from the Navy in 1891. He then became a professor of celestial mechanics at Harvard (1896-1901). His handwritten quote, in full: “Fear not’, my Lord said, ‘we have well begun: Shrink not! but every way enlarge thy strength; Thou hast arrived at Purgatory!’” The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
