Description

ADELBERT AMES (1835-1933) SIGNED CALLING CARD, “Adelbert Ames/Bvt. Maj. Genl./U.S. Army”, 3 x 1, signed on the reverse of his calling card, by the American Civil War Union Army General, Senator, Mississippi Governor, Medal of Honor Recipient. He was a West Point graduate at the beginning of the Civil War and was seriously wounded at The Battle of the First Bull Run but refused to leave his guns and later received the Medal of Honor for his actions at Manassas. Post war he was Governor of Mississippi and took several steps to advance the rights of freed slaves, appointing the first black office-holders in state history. He was later elected U. S. Senator for Mississippi when the state was readmitted to the Union. He was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers in the Spanish-American war and fought at the Siege of Santiago in Cuba. Comes with a glossy photograph of the general. Both items are in fine condition.
