$300.00

Description

HE AND HIS BROTHER BUILT HIGH TEMPERATURE FURNACES AND WERE THE FIRST TO USE THE ELECTRIC FURNACE IN THE PRODUCTION OF ALUMINUM, CARBORUNDUM, SILICON, CALCIUM, CARBIDE, PHOSPHOROUS, AND VARIOUS ALLOYS. HERE IN HIS HANDWRITTEN LETTER TO ASHLEY T. COLE, HE TALKS ABOUT THE COWLES DESCENDANTS WHO CAME TO AMERICA IN 1636 AND THE REV. THOMAS HOOKER (1586-1647) [WHO CAME OVER ON THE MAYFLOWER], A PROMINENT ENGLISH COLONIAL LEADER AND CONGREGATIONAL MINISTER, WHO FOUNDED THE CONNECTICUT COLONY, AS BEING IN THE FAMILY LINE.

ALFRED HUTCHINSON COWLES (1858-1929) HANDWRITTEN LETTER SIGNED, “Alfred H. Cowles”, on a card 4.5 x 3.5, Jan 9th, 1918, to Ashley T. Cole, by the American metallurgist, scientist, inventor, economist, who along with his brother, was a pioneer in the aluminum process and in electric smelting. He is credited with creating modern methods of producing aluminum. He established the Cowles Electric Smelting and Aluminum Co. in the U.S. and in England, the British Aluminum Co. His handwritten letter provides interesting family history, in full: “John Cole of Hartford, also John Cole (Cowles) of Farmington, were of the congregation to whom Rev. Thomas Hooker first preached and advocated “a rule of the people, for the people, and by the people” 1636-1648. Connecticut adapted this form of government and held to it. She refused to join as one of the thirteen original states till an agreement was reached that our government should fall in line with the teachings of Thomas Hooker. Religious liberty of thought started with Luther, political liberty to humanity with Hooker.” The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
