ADMIRAL CHARLES HENRY DAVIS (1807-77) SIGNED SLIP, “C. H. Davis”, on a slip 4 x 1.5 mounted on an acid-free card with printed “Chief of Bureau/Bureau of Navigation, Navy Department, Official Business, by the rear admiral working in the United States Navy Coast Survey which provides the foundation for transportation and communications; mapping and charting; and a large number of applications of science and engineering. In the American Civil War he commanded the Western Gunboat Flotilla winning an important engagement in the Battle of Memphis. After the war he was the Superintendent of the United States Naval Observatory. He presided over the transit of Venus Commission (formed in 1872) and, at the time, a major astronomical event because measurement of the event helped astronomers calculate the distance of the earth from the sun and also the size of the solar system. In fine condition, with minor age toning.
