HE WAS AN AMERICAN INVENTOR, WHO EARLY IN HIS CAREER WORKED FOR THOMAS EDISON ON DEVELOPING A CONDUCTING CARBON FOR USE IN THE ELECTRIC LIGHT BULB, AND LATER ON HIS OWN HE DISCOVERED THE ABRASIVE CARBORUNDUM AND PERFECTED A METHOD FOR MAKING GRAPHITE. HERE HIS HANDWRITTEN QUOTE SUMMARIZES WHAT HE FELT SHOULD BE THE INVENTOR’S CREED: “IF YOUR PURPOSE IS A WORTHY ONE, IT IS POSSIBLE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT.”
EDWARD GOODRICH ACHESON (1856-1931) SIGNED QUOTE, “Edward G. Acheson, New York, April 7th, 1919”, on a card 4.25 x 3.5, by American chemist and inventor of the Acheson Process, which is still in use to make carborundum, which is used to form hard ceramics that are widely used in applications requiring high endurance, such as car brakes and clutches, and ceramic plates used in bullet proof vests. He received 70 patents on devices, techniques, and compositions of matter in the field of mechanics, electricity, electrochemistry, and colloid chemistry relating to abrasives and graphite products. The Acheson Graphite Company was formed in 1899 to manufacture carborundum and graphite, and in 1928 it merged with the National Carbon Co. He also formed Acheson Colloids Co. to produce commercial forms of colloidal graphite products. His handwritten quote defines what he felt was the inventor’s creed, in full: “If your purpose is a worthy one, it is possible of accomplishment.” The card is boldly signed and is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
